Professor says Bin Laden tape a fake

" A Duke professor says he is doubtful about Thursday's audiotape from Osama bin Laden. Bruce Lawrence has just published Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama Bin Laden, a book translating bin Laden's writing. He is skeptical of Thursday's message. It was like a voice from the grave, Lawrence said. He thinks bin Laden is dead and has doubts about the tape. Lawrence recently analyzed more than 20 complete speeches and interviews of the al Qaida leader for his book. He says the new message is missing several key elements [...]

Lawrence believes faulty Pakistani intelligence led to the strike and the civilian deaths, and the tape was leaked by Pakistani authorities to divert attention from their mistake."

Sorry, I'm sceptical as to it being a forgery.

If bin Laden was dead the US would have claimed the biggest victory since WW II.

There have occasionally been such claims in the past but without any proof attached.

This is what worries me Gert. I wrote a few things on your blog in response to Timmer about what seems to me at least a policy not to catch Bin Laden either pre 9/11 or post 9/11. And theres millions of dollars reward on his head. It's been 4 years since 9/11. No doubt many Americans angry and can't understand why they haven't captured or proven obviously that they have killed him.

To me at least it seems he's left out there alive or dead as a bogey man threat for Bush to use politically and keep scaring the Americans with.

If bin laden were officialy pronounced dead and Hussein remained in captivity [as he does of course] it would become much more difficult to continue duping people, regarding the ongoing "war on terror".

Jultra and Richard:

It's a hypothesis but without proof it's no more than conjecture.

I suggest we stick to the facts as much as we can. If we don't we're really as bad as them.

The whole "global terror" thing is largely a house of cards, right?

Well, let's not build the same: it will undermine our position in the face of our opponents.

It's hard to find concrete facts, but assumptions are simply not good enough (although I can't help making quite a few of my own, of course).
